Choices in Childbirth Statement

Our Bodies Ourselves created this statement in 2008, in collaboration with physicians, midwives and women’s health advocates who support safe choices in childbirth. Choices in Childbirth has been used, and will continue to be used, to show support for evidence-based birth models as relevant policy issues are debated in legislatures and court houses around the country.

Tanya Wills appears in Season 1, Episode 7

Your Brain On Birth

When I interviewed homebirth Midwife, Tanya Wills, she said one important criteria to move forward with a homebirth was to have everyone on the birth team supportive of the mother’s choice. If the partner disagrees with the homebirth scenario, the quiet insecurity and disapproval will be present and disturb the mother’s ability to completely let go. So while the approval of a homebirth may not be your issue, it is important for the mother to feel secure and un-self conscious with those present to move, act and sound however she needs, to be able to find her inner monkey to birth.

Does Paternity Leave Have to Be So Lonely?

“Three moms with three babies is one hundred times easier than one mom and one baby,” says Tanya Wills, a midwife who owns and operates Manhattan Birth, a support program that included a mom-focused meet-up. “Forming that community is incredibly beneficial. You’re connecting to people who are having the same experience as you are.”
